DETROIT — State Representative Harvey Santana (D-Detroit) will give away backpacks to students, among other activities, starting at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at the Mackenzie School, 10147 W. Chicago St. in Detroit.

“I am very grateful to be giving back to the community because growing up in Detroit is not an easy task for young people,” Santana said. “I strive to support public schools not just because they are fixtures of the community, but because education is critically important for our young people.”

In addition to the backpack giveaway, Santana will present framed athletic jerseys to the school’s alumni association. During its storied history, the former Mackenzie High School won state championships in multiple sports and produced professional athletes. Santana also will speak to a group of eighth-graders as they begin a new school year.

“I believe it is imperative we impress on students the value of hard work and determination, especially when it comes to their schooling,” Santana said. “Success in school sets them up for success in the next stage of their life, whether it’s college, trade school or the workforce.”
