LANSING, Mich., July 7, 2025 — July 1 is the deadline for the legislature to pass and present a budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year to the governor. Since gaining a majority, House Republicans have delayed the budget process, refusing to come to the negotiation table in good-faith. After the deadline, state Rep. Helena Scott (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“When lawmakers refuse to lead, it’s the people who pay the price. It’s that simple. Without a budget, critical programs are stalled, essential services grind to a halt, and families, businesses and communities are left in a cloud of uncertainty. House Republicans had months to act — months to negotiate, to govern and to meet their most basic obligation. Instead, they chose delay over duty and dysfunction over responsibility. Their failure to deliver a budget isn’t just negligent, it’s dangerous.”
