LANSING — With no hearings or public input, the legislative majority rushed through House Bill 4397 late tonight, a massive giveaway to insurance companies in the form of loopholes and no guarantees or even promises of lower rates. In response, state Rep. Nate Shannon (D-Sterling Heights) issued the following statement:

“I understand the people of my district and this state have a deep desire to see auto insurance reforms in Michigan. Our rates are the highest in the nation. HB 4397 is all smoke and mirrors to make Michigan drivers feel like something has been done until they get into an accident, are bankrupted, then directed to Medicaid to get their bills paid. I could not in good conscience vote yes for a bill that doesn’t provide any long term rate reductions and lands Michigan drivers on Medicaid even though they have paid insurance premiums all their life.”
