LANSING, Mich. Oct. 7, 2024 — Michigan House Democrats passed legislation at the end of September to supplement funding for school systems across the state to use for school safety and mental health. The supplemental school funding legislation, HB 5503, will allow schools to spend responsibly on solutions tailored to each school’s individual needs, furthering Democrats’ legacy of putting schools and students first. School investments for Skaggs’ House District include:
- East Grand Rapids Public Schools: $333,153
- Forest Hills Public Schools: $1,029,821
- Grand Rapids Public Schools: $1,552,634
- Kentwood Public Schools: $1,058,606
“As a parent, former educator and legislator, I know that every school faces unique challenges,” Skaggs said. “Our legislation empowers schools and teachers to address students’ most pressing needs; whether it’s improving school safety, expanding juvenile mental health resources or enhancing educational opportunities, we’re making a real difference in the lives of young people.
Skaggs also voted in favor of House Bill 5803. The bill permanently lowers the Michigan Public School Employees Retirement System (MPSERS) fund contribution rate, giving schools more savings each year to put money back into classrooms.
“By reducing the financial burden on schools and giving them more flexibility, we are helping to create environments where every student can thrive. This is an investment in the future of Michigan children, and I’m proud to support it,” Skaggs concluded.
