LANSING, Mich., May 7, 2025 — State Rep. Phil Skaggs (D-East Grand Rapids) introduced a bill today aimed at making Victory in Europe Day recognized by the state annually as a holiday. After the bill’s introduction, Skaggs issued the following statement:

“Today, I introduced a bill to make Victory in Europe Day a state-recognized holiday every year on May 8 — it is important that Americans commemorate a moment in time when we were united together fighting against fascists, especially during a time when people are supporting them now. As fascism is rising again, it is vital that we commemorate a heroic generation that was united to defeat the Nazis. It’s time that Americans come together once again to resist tyranny and dictatorship.”
