Detroit, Mich., July 7, 2022 — State Rep. Karen Whitsett (D-Detroit) issued the following statement regarding the tragic death of Detroit Police Officer Loren Courts yesterday evening:
“I am simply heartbroken to hear of the news that one of our Detroit Police officers was killed in the line of duty last night. To know that this tragedy happened right here in our community is absolutely terrible, and I am truly at a loss for words.
“Too many people are dying every day from gun violence in the city of Detroit, and our police officers are risking their lives 24/7 in an effort to protect our communities from this deadly epidemic. From freeway and drive-by shootings to domestic disputes and mass shootings, gun violence is boiling over in our city. Even our children and babies are being caught in the fire, and this has to end.
“As we remember the life of Officer Courts, we must vow to address the root of the problem of gun violence in our city and throughout our nation. How do we prevent at-risk individuals from acquiring deadly weapons like the one that was used last night? Where is the value for life in our communities? Where is the respect for our fellow human beings? Each and every day, people are dying senselessly, and it must stop.
“My heart goes out to the family and loved ones of Officer Courts as they grieve his passing, especially as he leaves behind two children and a loving wife. In the coming days, it will be more important than ever to hold each other tight and be together. I urge my community to remain vigilant and strong as we await further details.”
