LANSING — Gov. Rick Snyder delivered his final State of the State address this evening. In response, House Democratic Floor Leader Christine Greig (D-Farmington Hills) issued the following statement:
“While Gov. Rick Snyder likes to brag that Michigan is the ‘Comeback State,’ I’ve got to wonder what, exactly, he means. A recent survey found that 60 percent of Michiganders feel that their economic stability is the same — or worse — as it was when the governor took office seven years ago in the midst of the Great Recession. People aren’t a ledger book of debits and credits — they are families who are concerned about their children’s education, seniors who are making desperate decisions between prescriptions and groceries and students deciding whether they can afford to stay in Michigan or will have to leave the state to start a career. Despite his words tonight, Gov. Rick Snyder has little to show for his time in office: a generation of children in a large city was poisoned by their own tap water; major companies like Amazon and Foxconn turned away from investing in Michigan because of our disappointing infrastructure and education systems, and families still contend with stagnant wages even though they’re working harder than ever. I hosted President Steve Claywell of the Michigan Building and Construction Trades Council and President of the Women’s March Michigan Phoebe Hopps at the State of the State address tonight because they understand the day-in-and-day-out struggles of everyday Michiganders better than Gov. Snyder ever could. They remind me that I’m fighting for working families, future generations and seniors so that they get a fair share as we move the economy forward.”
