“I am pleased that Lt. Gov. Brian Calley has signed into law House Bill 4459, a bill I sponsored that protects millages for the Detroit Institute of Arts and Detroit Zoo from being misappropriated for other uses by downtown development authorities. This new law assures voters that taxpayer money they agreed to pay to support important Detroit-area cultural institutions will go to support those places so that all families can enjoy them.

“I am especially thankful that my bill has been passed with bipartisan support and signed into law during a time when the future of the Detroit Institute of Art’s collection of masterworks could be threatened by a city of Detroit bankruptcy. It would be a tragedy to see cultural treasures sold off to satisfy creditor bills. By ensuring that millages intended to support the DIA and Detroit Zoo will go to those institutions, we can strengthen them for the long run.”
