“Today I offered an amendment to restore the funding to the school-based health center program in the Community Health budget. One of these school-based health programs is in Muskegon and two are in Detroit, in my district. One hub is located at King High School just down the street from my house, with three elementary schools also participating, and one hub at Western International High School in Southwest Detroit, with three neighborhood elementary schools also participating.
“These centers provide important services to students from low-income neighborhoods – mental health services, primary care and school nursing. A child’s ability to learn in school is affected by their health. These programs just began and are nearing full implementation of the hub model. To take away funding of these programs while they are just getting to full implementation is a disservice to Michigan’s children.”
