LANSING — Yesterday, the Michigan Legislature voted on and passed the One Fair Wage and the MI Time to Care citizen ballot initiatives, which would increase the minimum wage and guarantee paid sick leave for all, respectively. In response, state Rep. Abdullah Hammoud (D-Dearborn) issued the following statement:

“Progressive values won out today. Thanks to the awesome organizing efforts by One Fair Wage and MI Time to Care that gathered support from nearly 800,000 voters, the ballot initiatives to raise the minimum wage and provide guaranteed paid sick leave for Michigan workers were both taken up and passed by the Michigan Legislature. That being said, we need to hold our elected officials accountable to the intent of these petitions and the will of Michigan voters. The working people in this state deserve the right to earn a living wage and the ability to take a sick day, without putting their job or income in jeopardy. The fight to uphold these values may not be over just yet.”
