LANSING — Today, House Republicans approved House Bill 5526 during a marathon late-night session, establishing a school ranking system to label Michigan schools without proposing resources or solutions to address school improvement. In response to its passage, state Rep. Bill Sowerby (D-Clinton Township) issued the following statement:

“This legislation does not adequately take into account the external factors that may impact academic performance, but allows even a high-performing student attending a poorly-graded school to be unfairly painted with the same broad brush. We shouldn’t be penalizing students for things outside of their control. We should be working together to ensure that all students have the resources they need to be successful.”
