LANSING — Tonight, the House and Senate convened for a joint legislative session to hear Gov. Rick Snyder give his eighth and final State of the State address. In response, state Rep. Brian K. Elder (D-Bay City) issued the following statement:
“While many families throughout the state continue to struggle with declining or stagnant wages, the governor tonight had the nerve to claim that Michigan is in the midst of a ‘comeback.’ Perhaps our definitions of what constitutes a comeback differ, as I don’t see seven years of empty promises and putting profits before people as building up to a comeback. Even now, his own party supports doling out pay cuts to hardworking families by repealing our prevailing wage laws. But enough is enough: Michigan families deserve better than fancy rhetoric and tax breaks for the wealthy. This year, we must focus on building an economy that works for everyone in our state, regardless of their ZIP code or the size of their bank account.”
