LANSING — The Michigan House of Representatives voted Senate Bills 335 and 336 out of the Elections and Ethics Committee today, rushing them through to a vote on the House floor, where both bills passed. In response, state Rep. Brian K. Elder (D-Bay City) issued the following statement:
“‘No servant can serve two masters. He will either hate one and love the other, or be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and mammon. The Pharisees, who loved money, heard these things and sneered at him.’ The Republican Party often claims to be the party of Christian ideals — like those from the above passage in the New American Bible — yet they seem to have forgotten their roots today. It should come as no surprise that the party that doubled campaign donations in 2013, after cramming through Right-to-Work, are once again pushing legislation that makes it easier for big money donors to make unlimited donations to super PACs. Not once have I heard from constituents that they want more money or less transparency in political campaigns. Yet here we are, doing just that. This legislation is bad for Michigan, bad for our constituents and most of all, a bad mark on the conscience of those who voted for it.”
