LANSING — Today, House Republicans rushed through House Bill 6553 to allow the Legislature an absolute right to intervene in court proceedings, effectively undermining the power of the attorney general's office and ignoring the will of the voters who elected Attorney General-elect Nessel last month. In response to its passage, state Rep. Brian K. Elder (D-Bay City) issued the following statement:

“This last-minute power grab from Republican legislators who lost their monopoly on power is exactly the type of partisan politics Michigan voters are tired of. My people sent me to Lansing to make sure their roads are fixed, their health care is affordable, and their water is safe. Not to play petty games based on election results. Michigan’s working families deserve better than shameful policies like House Bill 6553.”
