LANSING — Today, a group of bipartisan legislators introduced a package of bills designed to address sexual assault in the state of Michigan. State Rep. Erika Geiss (D-Taylor) sponsored a bill in the package which would update the sentencing guidelines for sexual misconduct under the pretext of medical treatment. In addition, Rep. Geiss also issued the following statement:
“I’m heartened to see that we have finally begun to address the seriousness and prevalence of sexual assault in our society. Too often in places where women and young girls should feel safe, they have instead become sites of trauma, and our legislation seeks to put an end to that. No one should go into a doctor’s office and be preyed upon by their healthcare provider, and there should never again be a reason a healthcare provider’s depravity can be passed off as a medical treatment.
“We have taken important steps to see that this tragedy is never repeated, and I look forward to working with my colleagues to see these bills signed into law.”
