LANSING — Today, Legislative Republicans passed two bills, SB 1171 and SB 1175, gutting the citizen-led ballot initiatives that were passed into law back in September. In response, state Rep. Jim Ellison (D-Royal Oak) issued the following statement:

“Residents of Madison Heights and Royal Oak have worked tirelessly for years to raise our minimum wage and provide every Michigan worker with basic sick leave. Republican lawmakers are once again circumventing the will of the people by adopting and gutting these citizen-led ballot initiatives. Everyone who works full-time should be able to afford to support their family and take care of their health without risk of losing their job. I hope Gov. Snyder will veto these bills to protect the will of the people. If Gov. Snyder won’t step up, I look forward to these citizens showing the Republicans that they can’t veto the people of Michigan.”
