LANSING — Today, state Rep. John Chirkun (D-Roseville) testified in the House Regulatory Reform Committee on his House Bill 5940, dealing with the sale of fireworks. HB 5940 would allow cities and townships in densely populated communities to regulate the number of, and the distance between, tents and temporary structures from which fireworks are sold. It is part of a bipartisan package of bills to provide increased local control of fireworks and more information for consumers on the use and sale of fireworks. In addition, Rep. Chirkun issued the following statement:
“I am pleased to work with my colleagues on this fireworks package to address concerns of residents and local law enforcement while respecting the rights of people to own and sell fireworks. The use of fireworks is an important part of the holidays for many families, and so I hope our bills can take care of some of the problems that have come about because of fireworks in the past and ensure safe usage for all.”
