LANSING – Today, Legislative Republicans passed two bills, SB 1171 and SB 1175, gutting the citizen-led ballot initiatives that were passed into law back in September. In response, state Rep. John Chirkun (D-Roseville) issued the following statement:
“If there’s anything we’ve learned in the last eight years it’s that what Republicans can’t earn from the people honestly they will take by force in the Legislature. These initiatives were passed in September in a cynical attempt to keep them from the hands of the voters, with every intention of being gutted now. Instead of fighting to improve the lives of Michigan’s working families the legislative majority has chosen once again to cozy up to their corporate donors today and, once again, the people of Michigan will be worse off for it.”
