LANSING — Today, House Republicans rushed through House Bill 6553 to allow the Legislature to intervene in court proceedings, effectively undermining the power of the Attorney General's office and ignoring the will of the voters who elected Dana Nessel attorney general just last month. In response to its passage, state Rep. Kristy Pagan (D-Canton) issued the following statement:

“Every Michigan resident should be outraged by the blatant power grab and unprecedented actions taken by the Republican majority to restrict the ability of a publicly-elected office simply because our Attorney General-elect is from the Democratic Party. The legislation fast-tracked by my Republican colleagues these last few weeks is part of an outrageous attempt to strip away the authority of the governor, secretary of state, and the attorney general that the people of Michigan elected. Our democracy works because of the balance of powers. The Republican majority has overstepped in their pursuit to once again silence the people they supposedly represent.”
