LANSING — Today, Legislative Republicans passed two bills, SB 1171 and SB 1175, gutting the citizen-led ballot initiatives that were passed into law in September. In response, state Rep. Kristy Pagan (D-Canton) issued the following statement:
“Today, the Republican majority passed unprecedented and unconstitutional bills that gutted two citizen-led initiatives – One Fair Wage and MI Time to Care – that were adopted by the Michigan Legislature just two months ago. This shameful attack on the working men and women of Michigan hurts not only our families, but is a direct assault on the democratic process by circumventing the will of the people. Even more insulting, these bills were introduced two days after Election Day and have been rushed through the legislative process. This blatant disregard for the people of Michigan pushes our working families further into poverty, is an assault on family values, and ignores the very people we were sent to represent. I will never stop fighting for the promise of America – which guarantees the opportunity that everyone, regardless of background or ZIP code, can earn a living wage and provide for themselves and their family.”
