“I am deeply disappointed that the House Families, Children and Seniors Committee voted today to send three bills to the House floor that allow adoption agencies to deny adoption services to same-sex couples, interracial couples or anyone else that the agency may object to on the basis of the organization’s faith. These bills will make it harder for children who need loving families to find a home, and send the message that Michigan is not a welcoming and tolerant state. Rather than drafting new rules to allow for discrimination and finding new ways to slight Michigan families, we should be working on laws that help children awaiting adoption find families and make clear that our state is open and welcoming to all of its citizens. Moving forward, I will always fight for policies of inclusion and respect for all Michganders.”
