LANSING — Today, state Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette) voted against the Michigan House of Representatives’ omnibus budget for fiscal year 2018-19 and school omnibus budget for fiscal year 2018-19. In response, Rep. Cambensy issued the following statement on her no vote on both bills:

“Balancing any budget is difficult, but where it stands now, the priorities that my constituents have voiced don’t line up with the current House budget. We have tried to get answers on how proposed cuts to the Michigan Department of Corrections might impact our prisons in the U.P. Having a clear understanding of what that line item corresponds to is paramount to receiving my support for this budget.

“In every county, city and township we have been in throughout House District 109, we’ve heard about the lack of community mental health services. We should be adding more funding, not less. It’s critical that we prioritize investments in education, infrastructure, health care and revenue sharing and send funding back to our local communities. The hard-working people in the U.P. deserve quality services for their tax dollars. We have more negotiating to do before the final budget comes out.”
