LANSING — This week, The Michigan Department of Corrections (MDOC) announced that it would close one prison this year on the west side of the state, meaning that the Newberry Correctional Facility in Newberry will remain open. In response, state Rep. Sara Cambensy (D-Marquette) issued the following statement:

“I am relieved to know that Newberry Correctional Facility in Luce County will remain open. While the Department of Corrections, our judicial system and our legislators continue to work on ways to reduce criminal offenses in our state, there is still a need for an effective corrections system that protects our families and communities. I am glad to know that the staff at Newberry will stay here and on the job, working with our prisoners to help them learn new life skills and behavior so they can go back to their families and homes, all while keeping our U.P. communities safe.”
