LANSING — Today, Legislative Republicans passed two bills, SB 1171 and SB 1175, gutting the citizen-led ballot initiatives that were passed into law back in September. In response, state Rep. Sherry Gay-Dagnogo (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“Working people in Detroit and across the state struggle every day to provide for their families; so after eight years of Republican inaction, hundreds of thousands of Michiganders were forced to join together to demand stronger wages and better benefits through a successful referendum process. The fruit of that labor — the two citizen-led initiatives passed into law in September — has now been aborted by Republicans today.
“To undermine the will of the people so blatantly is a violation of the public trust, and to do so after an election, safe from the political repercussions of these cowardly actions, is nearly criminal. By gutting these initiated laws, Republicans have robbed working families of their economic security, and they should be ashamed.”
