“As the chairwoman of the Progressive Women’s Caucus, I wish to thank Gov. Rick Snyder for doing the sensible thing and vetoing the ‘Choose Life’ license plate bill. Had he signed it into law, he would have allowed the Secretary of State to collect taxpayer dollars and direct them to a fund established by Right to Life of Michigan, a controversial advocacy group. It would have been a highly divisive act that would have only deepened the divide on an already contentious issue. Gov. Snyder correctly realized that the state has no business taking sides in such a passionate and emotionally charged debate. Instead of passing blatantly political bills like these, the Legislature should be doing more to expand access to quality health care for everyone, and doing more to bring down maternal and infant mortality rates in Michigan.”
