DETROIT — This weekend, thousands of Unite Here union members throughout five cities, including Detroit, went on strike to protest Marriott’s unfair wage practices. The workers at Detroit’s Westin Book Cadillac are still on strike today. In response, state Rep. Tenisha Yancey (D-Harper Woods) issued the following statement:

“No one should have to work two or three jobs to survive, yet that is the reality the members of the Unite Here Local 24 are facing. They are not asking for special treatment; they are fighting for the freedom to earn a strong paycheck that allows them to support their families. You cannot support a family when you only receive a two cent raise every year. Many of them are forced to play Russian roulette with their health and financial security because they cannot count on their employer to pay them what they have earned, and that isn’t right.  I am proud to support these workers and will continue to stand with them.”
