LANSING — Today, the House of Representatives voted on the One Fair Wage and MI Time to Care citizen ballot initiatives, which would increase the minimum wage and guarantee paid sick leave for all, respectively. The proposals passed. In response, state Rep. Tom Cochran (D-Mason) issued the following statement:
“If we are going to approve citizen petitions then we should honor them. But by adopting two perfectly good ballot initiatives, legislative leaders gave themselves the ability to gut these laws in the future and silenced the voice of the people who collected signatures to put these issues on the ballot. I support a higher minimum wage and earned paid sick time, and I will fight any attempt to subvert our Democratic process by those wishing to suppress the efforts of working people in Michigan.”
