LANSING — Today, House Republicans rushed through House Bill 6553 to allow the Legislature an absolute right to intervene in court proceedings, effectively undermining the power of the attorney general’s office and defying the will of the voters who elected Attorney General-elect Nessel last month. In response to its passage, state Rep. Yousef Rabhi (D-Ann Arbor) issued the following statement:
“This blatant power grab by Republicans could unhinge the very checks and balances that stabilize our democracy. The job of the Legislature is to pass laws, not litigate them. Republicans are endangering the very foundation of our democracy with their legislative overreach into executive and judicial functions. ”
