Statement from state Representative Adam Zemke (D-Ann Arbor) on the House Appropriations Department of Education Subcommittee cuts in response to a proposed State Board of Education policy on gender identity in schools:

“Young people across the state — both kids who are still in school and those who have just graduated and are deciding where to begin their adult lives — are looking at us to see what direction this state is taking. This action signals that certain people are not welcome here, which is the exact opposite message we need to send. Young professionals and innovative businesses looking to expand and create jobs want to locate in an inclusive, welcoming state. While this punitive budget cut is a petty step in the wrong direction, I’m hopeful we can reverse it and show the nation that everyone is welcome and should be treated equally in Michigan.”
