“We have seen the destruction that ‘Stand Your Ground’ laws have had in Florida, where a 17-year-old was gunned down and the gunman used ‘Stand Your Ground’ to initially avoid prosecution. Here in Michigan, we don’t need to wait for a similar disaster before we get rid of our version of that dangerous law. While people have a right to protect themselves, they also have the responsibility to only use deadly force as a last resort. That’s why I’m supporting the repeal of PA 309 and 310 of 2009, and I urge everyone in the state who is concerned about vigilante violence to call on their Legislators to demand we do away with these hazardous laws.”
