“I sponsored House Bill 5165, which today became my first piece of legislation to be approved by the full Michigan House of Representatives. It is a part of a legislative package that could spare homebuyers from aggravation and wasted time and money. New federal regulations require lenders to provide the exact fees on closing documents a full three days prior to closing. In Michigan, however, document fees at your Register of Deeds office are charged per page. If your mortgage shows up at closing with just one extra page, your fee cost would increase and your closing would have to be rescheduled, a minimum of three days later. This bipartisan package of bills establish a flat and predictable fee for consumers in lending. My bill passed the House with a 103-5 vote.”
