“The audit of the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans released yesterday shows that veterans are still suffering from sub-standard care, and that is wrong and needs to change immediately. I am glad to see that Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency Director Jeff Barnes has resigned. I hope that new interim Director James Redford will move quickly to make changes at the home to ensure that our veterans are receiving proper care and are treated with the dignity that they deserve. Privatizing the Grand Rapids Home for Veterans in an effort to pinch pennies and save money for the state was wrong when it happened back in 2011, and it has been proved wrong ever since with the string of problems and poor care that have been documented and reported. Our veterans living there deserve the best care, and the people in charge of the home need to be held accountable. We can do better for our veterans, and I commend the staff of state employee resident caregivers at the D.J. Jacobetti Home for Veterans who serve our veterans well.
