“I am asking the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) to investigate piles of ‘coke breeze,’ a byproduct from the manufacturing of blast furnace coke, at the Waterfront Petroleum Terminal Co. property on West Jefferson. It is my understanding that ‘coke breeze’ is made up of finer particles than petroleum coke (pet coke). I am concerned and would like to know if ‘coke breeze’ could be more likely to travel in the air and if it could harm people if ingested into their lungs. What are the potential health impacts if ‘coke breeze’ is ingested? I hope that MDEQ will agree to investigate this and take the appropriate actions if it is discovered that ‘coke breeze’ is a health hazard.”
