LANSING, Mich., Dec. 7, 2023 — Automaker Stellantis announced plans to temporarily lay off one shift of workers at the Detroit assembly plant that builds Jeep sport utility vehicles. The decision, during the holiday season, will affect roughly a third of the 4,600 employees at the plant. In response to the layoff breaking news, Speaker of the House Joe Tate (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“This announcement by Stellantis reducing their workforce is concerning. There is ample opportunity in this state for Michigan workers to thrive and manufacturers to succeed in continuing to build world-class products as the auto industry evolves. Layoffs should be a decision of last resort and I encourage Stellantis to revisit reducing the number of shifts at the Mack Assembly Plant. In the meantime, those impacted by layoffs should not hesitate to contact my office for help in accessing available support during these challenging times.”
