LANSING, Mich., June 3, 2020 — State Rep. Lori Stone (D-Warren) introduced a resolution today to declare Friday, June 5, 2020 as National Gun Violence Awareness Day in the state of Michigan. The day is dedicated to remembering and honoring all victims and survivors of gun violence, while recognizing the need for further action at all levels of government.
“Gun violence has robbed our families and communities of people we love for far too long, and it’s up to all of us to stand up and say enough,” said Stone. “We must continue to raise our voices and join together in this important fight for safety and responsible gun ownership. I’m proud to have introduced this resolution and look forward to a future where gun violence isn’t considered as American as apple pie.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were a total of 1,310 Michigan firearm deaths in 2018, with nearly 13 deaths for every 100,000 people. Nationwide, more than 100 Americans are killed by guns and an additional 200 are shot and wounded each day. The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has also resulted in an increased risk for gun deaths related to intimate partner violence, suicide by gun and unintentional shootings.
June 5 will mark the 6th annual National Gun Violence Awareness Day and individuals are invited to wear the color orange in solidarity.
