LANSING, Mich., June 27, 2024 — The Michigan Legislature passed the final state budget for the 2025 fiscal year today. After passage, Speaker of the House Joe Tate (D-Detroit) issued the following statement:
“Earlier today, House Democrats passed a budget that represents our core Democratic values — keeping residents safe, creating equitable housing, and making life more affordable so families can flourish. Every hometown from Detroit to Grand Rapids to the Upper Peninsula will benefit from tens of millions of dollars to establish a Public Safety Trust Fund, $100 million for innovative housing programs, and tax relief for families and seniors. With the passage of this budget, Michigan Dems are making transformative investments for every main street and every household, and Michigan continues to be on a stronger and brighter path forward.
“We delivered a school aid budget that invests in our kids by freeing up an average of an additional $400 for every public-school student and continues to make historic investments in funding for at-risk and special education programming. As part of our commitment to prioritize teachers and schools, House Democrats took action on two pending bills, HB 5803 and SB 911. These bills return hard earned dollars to Michigan teachers and set into statute a plan to reduce the impact of retiree costs on school employees, while also fully funding benefits.
“The House passed a significant number of bills over the past several days and the Clerk’s office is still working to transmit all those bills. There is also still more work to be done with our colleagues in the Senate and with the Governor to determine the final version of MPSERS reform, but I am committed to continuing that conversation. House Democrats enthusiastically voted in support of these bills because we know that the school employees who worked over the past several years to help cover the costs of retirement and met their obligation deserve to see those dollars back in their paychecks.
“The budget is a statement of our priorities, and House Democrats are making smart and fiscally responsible decisions to deliver for the residents of Michigan and continue our commitment to putting PEOPLE first.”
