MADISON HEIGHTS – State Representative Jim Townsend (D-Royal Oak) read to local elementary school students on Monday as part of his efforts to celebrate “March is Reading Month.”

“Participating in ‘March is Reading Month’ is a great way to spend some quality time with your children while also teaching them an invaluable skill that will serve them well for the rest of their lives,” Townsend said. “It was a pleasure to sit down and share a book with such enthusiastic students, and I was honored to be part of it.”

Townsend read to first- and fifth-grade classes to commemorate “March is Reading Month” on Monday at Hiller Elementary School in Madison Heights. He will visit more local schools in the upcoming weeks to promote reading throughout the month.

“When kids see their parents and other adults reading, it shows them that reading is important and that we value education,” Townsend said. “Studies continue to show that reading to our children at a young age is invaluable to their education and development. March is a great time to pick up a book and promote the love of reading to our children.”

Residents of Madison Heights and Royal Oak are encouraged to contact Townsend at (517) 373-3818 or by e-mail at jimtownsend@house.mi.gov to share any concerns or questions they have about state government.
