LANSING, Mich., Sept. 17, 2024 — National Voter Registration Day is a nonpartisan, civic holiday that celebrates the democratic process and encourages people across the country to register to vote. In recognition of this year’s holiday, state Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou (D-East Lansing) issued the following statement:
“I encourage everyone to be an active participant in our democracy by registering to vote. It has been a great honor to work with my colleagues in the House and Senate to ensure safe and secure elections in our state, while also making sure all eligible Michiganders have their voices heard. The right to vote is the core of our democracy, and I urge everyone to exercise their civic duty at the polls.”
As chair of the House Elections Committee, Tsernoglou has worked to implement policies to make voting more accessible and safe. Recently, the House of Representatives voted to lift a ban on rideshare apps, such as Uber and Lyft, from offering free rides to the polls, expanded and improved the state’s automatic voter registration program, allowed individuals to become a permanent mail-in voter, and created harsher penalties for individuals who threaten or intimidate election workers. These pieces of legislation, paired with the fact that Michigan now allows nine days of early voting in every statewide and federal election, are part of the reason that Michigan was just ranked the second-best state in the nation in election administration policy.
