LANSING, Mich., Oct. 3, 2024 — State Rep. Penelope Tsernoglou (D-East Lansing) announced today that she, along with fellow Michigan House Democrats, signed onto a statement advocating for the passage of the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act. This statement highlights the urgent need for robust federal protections to ensure that every American has equal access to the ballot box.

“Our democracy thrives when every citizen can exercise their right to vote,” Tsernoglou said. “These legislative measures are essential to safeguarding that right and ensuring that our elections are free, fair and accessible to all.”

The statement, endorsed by several members of the Michigan House, emphasizes Michigan’s long-standing commitment to civil rights and the importance of continuing that legacy. It calls on federal leaders to act swiftly in passing these critical bills, which are designed to protect voting rights and prevent discriminatory practices.

“Michigan has a proud history of leading the charge for civil rights, and we must continue to uphold those values,” Tsernoglou added. “The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are crucial steps in maintaining the integrity of our electoral process.”

The Freedom to Vote Act aims to standardize voting access across the nation, while the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act seeks to restore and strengthen protections against discriminatory voting laws. The statement also commends Michigan’s federal legislators, including U.S. Sen. Gary Peters and U.S. Rep. Elissa Slotkin, for their leadership in championing these efforts.

“As we approach the upcoming election, it is more important than ever that we protect the fundamental right to vote,” Tsernoglou said. “The future of our democracy depends on our ability to ensure that every voice is heard.”
