Detroit Caucus Members React

DETROIT, Mich., June 12, 2025 — Members of the Detroit Caucus mourn the loss of Wayne County Commissioner Irma Clark-Coleman, who passed away at the age of 88 in Detroit.

“The news of Commissioner Clark-Coleman’s passing was devastating.  My heart goes out to her beloved family, friends, devoted church family,  the City of Detroit and Wayne County at large. I will always remember Commissioner Clark-Coleman as a tireless advocate for the most vulnerable residents in our community. Her legacy of service will be remembered, and her vibrant spirit will truly be missed,” said state Rep. Stephanie A. Young (D-Detroit), Detroit Caucus Chair.

Clark-Coleman was first elected to the Michigan House of Representatives in 1998 and again in 2000. She went on to run successful races for the Michigan Senate in 2002 and 2006, allowing her to continue serving the great people of the state.

“Irma was one of the real ones who held the people she represented in her heart and wore her fight for them on her sleeve. She served with integrity, compassion and a steadfast belief in the power of public service to improve lives. I am thankful to have known such a powerful woman, who put God, family and community first. My heart goes out to all who knew her,” said state Rep. Tyrone Carter (D-Detroit).

Clark-Coleman originally hailed from rural Georgia before making her life in Detroit with her wonderful husband, the late Rev. Ron D. Coleman, Sr. and their two children. Clark-Coleman attended Detroit Public Schools and was a college graduate with a B.A. and M.A. in communications from Wayne State University. She was the Church Mother at Living Waters Church.

“This is a great reminder to give people their flowers while they are here. The sudden passing of Irma, a longstanding colleague and Sister in government, has made me reflect on the power of serving others. She had my back and I had hers as my House district and her County Commission district overlapped in service to the same constituents. Irma always served with grace and compassion. The world, Detroit — and even my life — are all better for having had Irma on our side. My deepest sympathy goes to her family and friends,” said state Rep. Helena Scott (D-Detroit).

Clark-Coleman held a variety of positions in Wayne County government, starting in 1967 as a stenographer and eventually serving as assistant director for Public Information to the county Road Commission, Media Relations Manager for Wayne County Executive William Lucas, Press Secretary to County Executive Ed McNamara and Director of Human Relations. Clark-Coleman retired from Wayne County in 1998.

“The City of Detroit, County of Wayne and the entire state of Michigan has suffered a great loss with the passing of the Honorable Irma Clark-Coleman.  She was a powerhouse in politics known for her political savvy and her ability to work across the aisle and across issues with all people to make life better for her constituents and all Michiganders. Her legacy is cemented as a woman of wisdom who led by Christ-like example. May all who know her be comforted during this difficult time of loss,” said state Rep. Joe Tate (D-Detroit).
