State Rep. Dylan Wegela (D-Garden City) stands in support of state Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Township) against the transportation of radioactive waste to the state, Sept. 11, 2024, Anderson House Office Building.

LANSING, Mich., Sept. 13, 2024 — State Rep. Dylan Wegela (D-Garden City) spoke at a press conference this week against the transportation of radioactive waste to Michigan. The press conference, hosted by state Rep. Reggie Miller (D-Van Buren Township), happened as a direct result of the announcement of radioactive waste from the Manhattan Project being transported to the state. Following the press conference, Wegela issued the following statement:

“We deserve better than being the nation’s dumping ground for radioactive waste. In my view, it makes little sense to send radioactive waste to such a populated area, and to a state with such vast freshwater resources. We must send a clear message to the federal government and the rest of the country that Michigan will not welcome hazardous materials. I want to thank Rep. Miller for pushing the Legislature to do what is right by the residents in our communities, for putting people over politics and for fighting for common sense legislation.”
