LANSING, Mich., March 7, 2025 — House Republicans hastily and irresponsibly passed their fiscal year 2025-26 budgets yesterday  — House Bill 4161 and 4162 — which would cut the state general budget by almost 92%, gutting investments to a wide range of areas including education, school meals for kids, teacher preparation and support programs and more. In response, House Democrats voted against the bills and held a press conference to voice their concerns. After the bills’ passage, state Rep. Regina Weiss (D-Oak Park) issued the following statement.

“This reckless House Republican education budget will cut $5 billion and remove funding for transportation, school meals and our most vulnerable students. Every district in our state will feel these cuts. Republicans in Michigan attacked our education system on the same day the federal Department of Education was set to be dismantled by their counterparts in D.C. It is very telling and downright dangerous. They are making it clear that they just don’t care about our kids.”
