Bill allows high school athletes to benefit from name, image, likeness

LANSING, Mich., Oct. 19, 2023 — In the spirit of the start of Michigan’s high school playoff season and all Michigan’s talented high school athletes, the Michigan House of Representatives voted in favor of House Bill 4816 today.

At the core of this bill is the compensation of Michigan high school athletes for the use of an athlete’s name, image and likeness. HB 4816, sponsored by state Rep. Jimmie Wilson, Jr. (D-Ypsilanti) pertains to high school athletes and the guidelines they must follow. After the vote, Wilson issued the following statement:

“Athletes who put in the time, effort and dedication to their sport deserve the rewards that come from it,” Wilson said. “If a high school athlete gains recognition for their outstanding talent, they should have the opportunity to get compensated from that popularity; it doesn’t come easy, and it sure is earned. I am happy I could spearhead my bill, and I am hopeful for its progression in the Senate.”
