LANSING — Today, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer signed an Executive Directive that works to close the gender wage gap by barring employers from requesting the salary histories of potential new employees. In response, state Rep. Angela Witwer (D-Delta Township) issued the following statement:

“Wage discrimination means fewer dollars in the pocketbooks of working families across the state, and that translates into fewer dollars in our local economies, slowing down growth and holding Michigan back from being the economic powerhouse it could be. Yet over the past eight years, while so many states took serious steps toward closing this gap, the previous administration in Michigan remained silent. I am grateful that Gov. Whitmer has taken this issue up swiftly and decisively, and am excited that Michigan finally has a leader working to remove the systemic inequalities preventing our families and women from earning the strong paychecks they deserve. We encourage legislative leaders to take up actions in the same spirit, and make sure that this agenda is made a priority.”
