Democratic lawmaker fights for budget that supports school communities

LANSING, Mich., July 3, 2025 — After an eight-hour session day and months of inaction, Michigan House Republicans failed to negotiate a state budget or produce a finalized bill for review ahead of the July 1 statutory deadline. Michigan schools must now plan in the dark. In response to House Republicans’ inability to complete their most important job as the House majority, state Rep. Stephen Wooden (D-Grand Rapids) issued the following statement:

“Everyday Michiganders deserve a good budget on time, not half-finished proposals that cut the services they rely on. For the past six months, House Republicans have focused on anything but the budget. They waged culture wars when they should have been at the negotiating table.

“Working with the Senate and the governor to produce a budget is the most important thing we do. It’s not homework you can slap together at the last second for a passing grade. If House Republicans couldn’t deliver a good budget on time, everyday Michiganders still deserve a good budget and House Democrats remain ready to negotiate in good faith and get that done as soon as possible.
