Recommended greater per-pupil funding would help Michigan retain teachers
LANSING, Mich., Feb. 14, 2025 — Gov. Gretchen Whitmer presented her executive budget recommendation earlier this month, which proposed substantial increases to per-pupil funding for fiscal year 2025-26. The school aid budget would increase base per-pupil funding by 4.1%, meaning an additional $392 per student for a total of $10,000 per pupil. In support of this recommendation to better support Michigan’s students, state Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) issued the following statement:
“The governor’s recommended increase in per-pupil funding would be a huge win for students and teachers across the state. While we’ve made historic strides in education funding, we must keep working to ensure every child has access to a quality education — and that includes making sure our state can attract and support more dedicated teachers to our schools.
“As many of our school districts struggle to attract and retain great teachers, increasing per-pupil funding will help ensure teachers are adequately compensated. This funding increase, along with giving public employees relief from high health insurance costs, are both crucial steps we can take to support and retain public school teachers in our state. I look forward to working with my colleagues to further develop this budget to build up Michigan’s public schools.”
