State Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) speaks at the “Protecting Michigan Workers” press conference in Sterling Heights on Jan. 21, 2025.

LANSING, Mich., Feb. 3, 2025 — In response to House Republicans holding hostage nine bills passed by the Senate and House, Senate Democrats filed a lawsuit today against Republican Speaker Matt Hall to compel Republicans to abide by the Constitution and deliver the legislation to the governor’s desk. Among these bills is House Bill 6058, sponsored by state Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren), which provides immediate relief to public employees and their families from high health insurance costs. The Senate Democrats’ lawsuit is a strong message to House Republicans that Michigan Democrats will not allow them to withhold more affordable health care, pensions and financial protections from Michigan’s working families. In response to the lawsuit, Xiong issued the following statement:

“This lawsuit demonstrates Democrats’ dedication to the working people of Michigan and to ensuring House Republicans respect the lawmaking process in our state. When House Republicans threw public employees and their families under the bus by holding this legislation hostage, I promised to keep fighting to ensure our public workers don’t have to sacrifice themselves and their families’ wellbeing to continue educating, protecting and serving our communities. Today, Democrats are taking action to ensure our teachers, police officers, firefighters and municipal employees receive the breathing room they deserve.”
