LANSING, Mich., Aug. 29, 2025 — On Tuesday, House Republicans passed their omnibus budget spending bill, House Bill 4706, which proposes slashing about $6 billion in critical services that Michiganders depend on — including cuts to maternal health, food assistance, public safety and other affordability programs. Following D.C. Republicans’ playbook, the House Republican budget is balanced on the backs of families, kids and working people. State Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) issued the following statement after voting no:
“After dropping this 800-page bill on House Democrats’ desks just an hour before we took a vote, House Republicans took to the floor to proudly proclaim that this bill cuts ‘waste and abuse.’ It is a shame that House Republicans would consider life-saving grant programs to improve maternal health outcomes across the state as ‘waste.’ Their over $4 billion in cuts to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, which supports Medicaid and our hospitals, will only hurt Michiganders already suffering from federal cuts.
“House Republicans are showing who they really are with this disastrous budget. They do not value Michiganders’ health, equitable access to education, public safety or even uplifting our military. They view essential services that help working families, children and mothers as waste. I stand with all Michigan families in not supporting this reckless and self-serving budget that puts politics over people.”
