Democratic lawmaker vows to continue pressuring House Republicans to protect Michiganders from attacks on health care, education

LANSING, Mich., July 25, 2025 — Yesterday, Republican House Speaker Matt Hall failed yet again to act on passing a state budget. Instead of focusing on protecting Michigan families from looming federal cuts to Medicaid and food assistance, he brought unrelated legislation to the floor for votes. In response to Hall’s tactics to undermine the budget process and public trust in the Michigan Legislature, state Rep. Mai Xiong (D-Warren) issued the following statement:

“This time last year, our Democratic-controlled Legislature was celebrating the signing of the full state budget that put the people of Michigan first. With just one month before the new school year begins and with federal cuts threatening our communities’ livelihoods, Speaker Hall has made it clear he has no intention of prioritizing the state budget. Instead, he and his allies continue to demean and dismiss essential programs that serve millions of children, families, seniors and veterans across Michigan, labeling them as ‘waste, fraud and abuse.’ These programs are not waste — they are lifelines.

“Every day we go to session and do not pass a budget is another day wasting taxpayer dollars. My Democratic colleagues and I will continue to put pressure on the Speaker and House Republicans to do their jobs, set aside the petty politics and join us in protecting Michiganders, fully funding our schools and providing stability.”
