DETROIT, Mich., April 27, 2021 — State Rep. Tenisha Yancey (D-Harper Woods) was appointed to serve on Gov. Whitmer’s Michigan Jail Reform Advisory Council. The Council will be responsible for facilitating, assisting, monitoring and evaluating the implementation of the jail reform legislation signed into law earlier this year. The legislation reshapes penalties for traffic offenses, prioritizes alternatives to jail and arrest, and aligns community supervision policies with research. Rep. Yancey issued the following statement in response:
“By focusing on rehabilitation rather than retribution, we can finally start solving some of the greatest challenges of the criminal justice system, and that is what the jail reform legislation will do. I was honored to work with the Michigan Joint Task Force on Jail and Pretrial Incarceration and sponsor legislation to make the Task Force’s recommendations a reality. I am excited to be joining the Council to continue doing this important work and ensure it is done with rehabilitation and equitable justice in mind.”
